Saoirse Shines as Rebellious Teen in Touching, Coming-of-Age Adventure

Saoirse Ronan is only 23, but she’s already been nominated for an Academy Award twice, for Brooklyn (2015) and Atonement (2005). Now, she’s a shoo-in to land another nomination for her memorable turn as the title character in Lady Bird.

It’s hard to say whether three times will prove to be the charm for the Irish ingenue, since this has been a banner year for actresses, with powerful performances turned in by worthy competitors like Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand and perennial-nominee Meryl Streep. Win or lose, Ronan deserves all the accolades she’s getting for exhibiting an enviable range in a very demanding role as a tormented teen constantly in crisis.

Life is an emotional roller coaster for this college-bound senior. And as the film unfolds, it’s easy to see why. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson is an iconoclast who refuses to conform, whether she’s rebelling from her overbearing mother (Laurie Metcalf) or breaking the rules at her Catholic high school. She dyes her hair a bizarre blend of red and pink, and insists on being addressed as Lady Bird by everyone.

Despite being an academic underachiever, she’s banking on college as her ticket out of town. She hates boring Sacramento, and won’t settle for a school anywhere but in New York City. But instead of studying to pick up her grades, she indulges her impulses by running for class president and trying out for a role in The Tempest. Plus, her hormones are raging, and she’s a little boy crazy, too. So, excuse her for not being able to keep her eyes on the university prize.

Lady Bird, Film Review, Saoirse Ronan, Academy Award,

The plot thickens in a variety of surprising ways it would be almost evil to spoil here. Suffice to say that Lady Bird is a fantastic, female-centric, instant classic reminiscent of both Juno (2007) and Bridesmaids (2011). Written and directed by Mumblecore movement maven Greta Gerwig, the picture is also ostensibly semi-autobiographical, since the Sacramento native attended an all-girls Catholic school before moving to Manhattan to attend Barnard College.

A delightful crowd pleaser well deserving of Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay!

Comfort Console by Skeeter Adds More Features to Bay Boats

By Craig Lamb

A private place to take care of business when the time comes is the purpose of a console head. Besides an on-board potty, the small space has historically served no other functional purpose for a saltwater bay boat.

Design engineers at Skeeter Boats had a different idea. What about a family friendly console roomy enough to make it welcoming to families, while not compromising deck space demanded by anglers in a serious fishing rig? Room to roam, more interior storage, and an innovative idea for an underrated feature were the challenges faced by engineers.

The successful result is the Comfort Console, now available as an option in the Skeeter SX240, SX230, and SX2250.

There is more to the Comfort Console than a comfy space for a potty break. You get two features dually important in a family-friendly bay boat: a roomy changing station with plenty of space to safely and discreetly change clothes, and space for a portable toilet.

Another unique element of the Comfort Console is how the designers managed to add interior storage space around the console. In today’s world of wide-screen fish finders, radios and other electronics needed to stay in the game equal a greater requirement for battery space. More space also makes batteries, electronics, and wiring systems more accessible for maintenance behind the console.

The Comfort Console even adds more seating space with the 35-quart Engel® Roto Molded High-Performance Cooler, featuring ice retention of up to 10 days. The Comfort Console is available as an optional feature, and the portable toilet is sold separately.

Skeeter has 70 years of innovative designs incorporated into its full line of boats for bass, multi-species, and saltwater angling.

Skeeter’s Bay Boats are specifically engineered to combine the comfort and convenience desired by families with the discriminating demands of hardcore saltwater anglers. All of the models are designed with safety and performance in mind.

Home Again

Blu-Ray Review by Kam Williams

Reese Witherspoon Romantic Romp Released on Home Video

After separating from her husband, Austen (Michael Sheen), Alice Kinney (Reese Witherspoon) decides to move from Manhattan to L.A. with her two young daughters, Rosie (Eden Grace Redfield) and Isabel (Lola Flanery). Although her dad has passed away, the return to the house she grew in is a no-brainer, since the girls will have a chance to live in the lap of luxury while being pampered by their doting grandma, Lillian (Candice Bergen).

Home Again, Blu-ray Review, Reese Witherspoon, Michael Sheen, Candice Bergen, zany romantic romp, 40th birthday, Pico Alexander

Alice’s late father was apparently a far better film director than spouse, considering how his embittered widow still complains about his philandering and smugly delights in  his demise, saying, “He’s gone now, so I won!” Nevertheless, the sprawling mansion the legendary icon provided does have a storeroom stuffed with Oscars, movie posters and other memorabilia from his enviable Hollywood career.

Soon after arriving, Rosie and Isabel become terribly homesick. That’s not the case with their suddenly-single mom, who heads to a pick up bar to celebrate her 40th birthday with a couple of long-lost BFFs. Next thing you know, the hot-to-trot cougars find themselves sharing drinks with a trio of fledgling filmmakers in their twenties, one of whom, Harry (Pico Alexander), is instantly smitten with Alice.

Selfishly, she not only takes all three home with her, but enjoys an ill-advised, one-night stand with her ardent admirer. This only serves to confuse curious Rosie, who asks some tough questions the next morning (“How did you meet?” “Did you have a sleepover?) when she discovers her mother in bed with a stranger.

Home Again, Blu-ray Review, Reese Witherspoon, Michael Sheen, Candice Bergen, zany romantic romp, 40th birthday, Pico Alexander

The farfetched premise plot further tests credulity when Granny Lillian, instead of objecting to the young men’s presence, invites them to move into the guest house upon learning that they’re almost broke and struggling to make it in showbiz. Not long thereafter, wouldn’t you know that Austen might arrive from New York unannounced, hoping to reconcile with his estranged ex?

Thus unfolds Home Again a zany romantic romp written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer. She makes an impressive debut, here, with a tasteful love triangle storyline reminiscent of Something’s Gotta Give (2003) and It’s Complicated (2009). Hallie didn’t have to look far for inspiration, as both of those hit pictures were written and directed by her Oscar-nominated mom, Nancy Meyers (for Private Benjamin).

Finally, a relatively-sophisticated, female-centric comedy revolving around romance rather than raunch.  What a refreshing treat!

Sprinter Eric Liddell\’s Life after Olympic Glory Chronicled in Bittersweet Biopic

On Wings of Eagles, DVD Review, Eric Henry Liddell, Chariots of Fire, tributeOn Wings of Eagles

DVD Review by Kam Williams

Sprinter Eric Liddell’s Life after Olympic Glory Chronicled in Bittersweet Biopic

Chariots of Fire (1981) chronicled the real-life exploits of Eric Henry Liddell (1902-1945), aka “The Flying Scotsman,” a world-class sprinter who won the gold medal in the 400-meter track race at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. What made his feat amazing is that he had only qualified to run the 100-meter dash but refused to compete when he learned that it would be staged on a Sunday.

You see, he was a devout Christian raised by missionaries who had instilled in their son the Biblical notion that the Sabbath was a holy day of rest. Consequently, he decided to enter the 400-meter contest instead, and miraculously managed to prevail against the best in an event he hadn’t trained for.

Chariots of Fire was a critically acclaimed crowd-pleaser which landed a quartet of Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. However, it took 36 years for someone to mount a sequel showing what became of the Olympic great in the wake of his glory days.

Co-directed by Stephen Shin and Michael Parker, On Wings of Eagles stars BAFTA-nominee Joseph Fiennes (for Shakespeare in Love) as Eric Liddell. At the point of departure, we learn that the unassuming athlete eschewed fame and fortune in favor of returning to China, the country of his birth, in 1925, to follow his calling to do missionary work.

He would settle down in Asia and start a family with the woman of his dreams, Florence Mackenzie (Elizabeth Arends). However, their marital bliss would be irreversibly altered by the Japanese invasion of China in 1937.

During the occupation, the Liddells were afforded a brief opportunity to leave the country. The dedicated minister decided to not abandon his flock, though he did send his pregnant wife and daughters, Patricia (Laura Justine Friis Lodahl) and Heather (Asta Friis Lodahl), to live with his in-laws in Canada. Sadly, he was subsequently interned in a concentration camp where he would suffer terribly before passing away in 1945, just months before Japan’s surrender.

A bittersweet tribute to a man of great faith who always opted to follow humbly in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.

New Woody Allen Pic Proves Terribly Disappointing

Wonder Wheel

Film Review

by Kam Williams

New Woody Allen Pic Proves Terribly Disappointing

I suppose Woody Allen was due for a dud. After being distracted during the Nineties by a bitter divorce and custody battle, the four-time Oscar-winner had enjoyed quite a resurgence since the turn of the century with a string of critically-acclaimed offerings that included Small Time Crooks (2000), The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001), Match Point (2005), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), Midnight in Paris (2011) and Blue Jasmine (2013).

While Wonder Wheel might not be Woody’s best film, it’s certainly his worst of this millennium. The film is set in the Fifties on Coney Island, where the first thing you notice is that everybody’s white, whether on the beaches or in the amusement park.

Yes, movies made back then were often lily-white productions which gave no hint that African-Americans even existed. But it’s a bit of a head-scratcher to witness a director taking his cues from a less-enlightened era, as if there’s still a reason, today, to hide the fact that there were plenty of black Coney Island patrons.

Besides constantly asking myself “Where the black people at?” the picture had this native New Yorker cringing at many of the characters’ inauthentic Brooklyn accents. The most distracting was Jim Belushi’s vaguely-familiar staccato. It took me half the movie to figure out that he was imitating the classic Chicago accent appropriately adopted by Dan Aykroyd to play opposite John Belushi in The Blues Brothers (1980).

Equally-unconvincing, if not as annoying, were the manners of speaking of co-stars Justin Timberlake, Kate Winslet and Juno Temple. Bensonhurst-born Steve Schirripa was the only lead actor to have the local cadence correct. Perhaps Woody shoulda also let Steve serve as the cast’s voice coach.

Besides all of the above, the unengaging script left a lot to be desired. At the point of departure, we learn that a middle-aged waitress (Winslet) is cheating on her carousel operator husband (Belushi) with a young lifeguard (Timberlake). The plot thickens when her miserably-married stepdaughter (Temple) moves back home unexpectedly, and proceeds to fall head-over-heels for her hunky lover, too.

This critic couldn’t figure out why Timberlake was intermittently breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly. Worse is the absence of any trademark Woody Allen humor, unless unintentionally funny moments count. Overall, a cinematic disaster that makes The Room (2003) look like Citizen Kane (1941).

Forward Thinking in the Wireless World

Forward Thinking in the Wireless World

by Amy Lignor

The demands and needs of today’s “wireless world” is constantly changing and must be met with forward thinking companies to enhance service now as well as in the future. Upon reviewing one such company, Airborne Wireless Network (AWN), you are learning more about a company that is, quite literally, creating a virtual “super-highway in the sky” to surpass the markets expectations to meet these demands.

Airborne Wireless Network’s concept is actually brilliant and simple. By utilizing commercial aircraft, as both receivers and routers, a meshed network of digital communication is created – the likes of which has never been seen. The system is easy to first install and execute with airline partners, but can be upgraded and serviced efficiently as well.

First it is important to understand the on-board hardware that will be installed on an airplane to create the “meshed network”.  The hardware will be able to support aircraft to aircraft awareness and real-time monitoring of the system. All participating aircraft in the Airborne Wireless Network, will have the ability to provide all the positions of the aircraft within a centimeter accuracy!  Once this incredible “Infinitus Super-Highway” is up and operational, it will have the potential to improve the situational awareness of the “Avionics for NextGen Mandate” the aviation community has strived to achieve.

The importance of the “Avionics for NextGen Conference” is key for recognizing current and future technologies that will enhance the aviation community. The conference brought together hundreds of professionals and leaders from the aviation community. A key goal was to take an in-depth look into the technical aspects of NextGen and offer valuable perspectives on how NextGen standards are determined and can be achieved, with these key aviation professionals coming together, they were able to explore the technologies driving the future of aviation. Virtually all aspects of aviation were addressed, including equipment requirements, solutions to challenges that arise with the implementation of NextGen technology and much more. Also, a close examination of the ability of different aircraft types to comply with the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) In and Out mandates, which is exactly what the “Infinitus” fully-meshed network in the sky will achieve.

The reasoning behind the “Infinitus Super-Highway” is a great deal like the principle behind the often-used, Occam’s razor. The simplest answer and solution to a problem is usually the right one. Airborne Wireless Network has done just that. The future is here today!

By installing small, lightweight equipment in airplanes to send signals that can be picked up and retransmitted by other planes, makes for a network that is easy to use, provides better service, easy to implement, maintain and eliminates problems.

Airborne Wireless Network’s “proof of concept” flights proven and provided valuable data regarding the potential of the network. Test flights proved high-speed data could be sent successfully from aircraft-to-aircraft, aircraft-to-ground, and vice versa, proving that the creation of the “Infinitus Super-Highway” is more than viable.  By using this airborne “meshed network”, aircraft location can be pinpointed, allowing all aircraft to share vital flight-data. Plus, with Airborne Wireless Network using aircraft world-wide at one time, this execution would create over 35,000 “satellites” crossing the globe at all times.

Simply stated, Airborne Wireless Network and their “forward thinking” in the world of digital technology is unmatched.

To learn more about Airborne Wireless Network, partners, programs and examine additional data regarding the superior benefits this new “superhighway in the sky” will deliver today and in the future, visit http://www.airbornewirelessnetwork.com

Look for articulate, quick-witted dialogue featuring names like Trump and Cosby that is rooted in evergreen conversations about politics, race relations and police brutality— all a mere mirror reflection of the American cultural landscape.

Born on September 2, 1971 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Katt grew up in Dayton. Strong-willed and self-motivated even as a young man, he became emancipated at 13 and relocated on his own to Florida where he worked as a door-to-door salesman.

Not long thereafter, he took his first shot at first stand-up, thrilling a crowd with a five-minute improv routine, much to his surprise. That’s when Katt, having searched his entire adolescence for a sense of purpose, found fulfillment in making people smiles.

Encouraged by his early success, Williams committed himself to fine-tuning his God-given talent— a unique comedic delivery audiences had not yet witnessed— by performing his routines in clubs all over the country. By 1999, he had become established in the pantheon of great African-American comics that also includes Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock.

Katt Williams, Father Figure, Interview, stand-up comedian, actor, rapper

After cultivating a loyal fan base, he made a smooth transition to TV and film, making a scene-stealing big screen debut playing “Money Mike” in Friday After Next. Here, the comeback kid talks about acting opposite Ed Helms, Owen Wilson, Ving Rhames, Glenn Close, J.K. Simmons and Christopher Walken in the new ensemble comedy, Father Figures.

Kam Williams: Hey Katt.

Katt Williams: Hello, Kam. Katt Williams

KW: I’m honored to have this opportunity to speak with you.

Katt: Oh, thank you. I appreciate it.

KW: What interested you in Father Figures?

Katt: When I read the script, I instantly understood that it was somehow funny and yet also touching. It really felt like something substantial. The only question was whether it would be cast correctly. Then, when you hear it’s going to be Owen Wilson, Ed Helms, Glenn Close, J.K. Simmons, Christopher Walken, Terry Bradshaw and Ving Rhames, it’s like, “Wait a minute! This is exactly what I was hoping for. So, I was “in” all through the process.

KW: Once again, you’ve managed to have the most memorable scenes in a movie, even in a support role.

Katt: Thank you, Kam. I’m always trying to wring as much, comedically, out of a performance as I possibly can. This role was different because it called for the exercise of a different muscle. It wasn’t just about, “More! More! More! More!” This film called for me to start with absolute constraint, to start at 0 and gradually accelerate from there. I appreciate the acting lesson within it.

KW: What would you say is the message of Father Figures?

Katt: It’s twofold. On the most basic level, it’s about not judging a book by its cover. That all close friends start out as strangers. That’s the beauty of the situation we’re in on this planet. We have the opportunity every day to meet someone we didn’t know who might become an integral part of our life that really matters. The second message is that we all have holes in our souls, and that we’ll be better people when we figure out how to fix those holes. So, it’s also about people trying to be more complete. And that’s a wonderful story to tell any time of year, but especially during the holiday season.

KW: Was there a meaningful spiritual component to your childhood?

Katt: I’ve always felt that way. I’ve sensed, at my best moments, that I was being led. So, I know that sort of protection exists. I also know that there are some people who are much more in tune with the universe than the rest of us. and their lives are evidence of that.

KW: Ling-Ju Yen asks: What is your earliest childhood memory?

Katt: I can remember thinking, at the age of 3, that I invented the concept of lying. By a brilliant thought process, I figured that I could fib and avoid the repercussions for something I had done, because lying meant that it never happened. However, by the time I was 5, I came to hate lying and to think of it as the worst thing in the world. That’s my earliest memory. Weird, but true!

KW: The Morris Chestnut question: Was there any particular moment in your childhood that inspired you to become the person you are today?

Katt: No, I could only envision myself doing something that was important to people. But years later, when comedy came into my life, I was so ready for it. I had already watched the great comics. It had just never occurred to me that that was something I could be doing, too. Coming from that to this was a lot and it makes you forever grateful.

KW: What’s on the horizon for you. More movies, more TV, more stand-up?

Katt: All of the above. I just finished an episode of Atlanta, and I have a Netflix special dropping January 16th called Great America. And I’ve just wrapped Meet the Blacks 2: The House Next Door with Mike Epps, Lil Duval, Bresha Webb, Zulay [Henao] and company. And right now, I’m just finishing up #TwoMinutesofFame with Jay Pharoah, Deon Cole and a bunch of great comedians.

KW: What happened to Jay when he joined SNL? I was expecting big things from that marriage , because I knew he was so talented.

Katt: It’s delicate when you’re using his set of skills for comedic purposes. It’s not the easiest thing to do. and that’s why he struggled on occasion. But when it’s done right, it’s perfect. Jay’s a rare talent, and I’m sure Saturday Night Live was just the start for him.

KW: The Uduak Oduok question: Who is your favorite clothes designer?

Katt: I hesitate to use the word “favorite”, because I’m a fan of so many great fashion designers. However, I’d say Tom Ford, as an organization. They get me and the way I like to dress. I like a little edge and a little flash. But I do like to be grounded in conservatism, and Tom Ford has never delivered me a bad product, ever.

KW: When you look in the mirror, what do you see?

Katt: I see someone who has managed to stick around for this amount of time without literally scraping their potential.

KW: The Viola Davis question: What’s the biggest difference between who you are at home as opposed to the person we see on the red carpet?

Katt: [LOL] I’m able to behave like the guy you see onstage although that’s not my entire existence. I might be a portion of that guy. At home, quiet prevails. It’s incense, candles and birds chirping. Everything’s done to maximize peace and tranquillity, because we know when we exit those doors, it’s going to be a whole different energy.

KW: Is there any question no one ever asks you, that you wish someone would?

Katt: [Laughs some more] There are a whole of list of questions. Listen, parodies of me have been done 7 or 8 times on SNL. Every time they want good black ratings, somebody’s doing Katt Williams. Jay Pharoah… Michael Che… Leslie Jones… Drake… Tiffany Haddish. with each of them, we’ve had a Katt Williams sighting, So, here’s a question I wish somebody would ask: How many impressions of you should they do before finally having the real Katt Williams on Saturday Night Live?

KW: Well put! Why do you spoof somebody so many times without inviting them on? The Anthony Mackie question: Is there anything that you promised yourself you’d do if you became famous, that you still haven’t done yet?

Katt: Oh, no. Absolutely not! Those were the first things that got done. I was so grateful to God, I did make sure I kept all my promises to Him, up front, of what I’d do in return for being successful.

KW: Harriet Pakula-Teweles asks: With so many classic films being redone, is there a remake you’d like to star in?

Katt: I hesitate to say, because I put it out there, someone else might jump on the idea. Although, I think it’s a great time to redo Trading Places.

KW: What is your favorite dish to cook?

Katt: Turkey. Turkey is a big deal because it’s so obvious when it’s not right, and just as obvious when you’ve nailed it. I like those recipes that a lot of work goes into.

KW: Making a movie is like that, too. Do you have any interest in directing?

Katt: Yes, but I’m focusing on producing right now. I’m producing both of those movies I told you about. [The House Next Door 2 and #TwoMinutesofFame]

KW: Larry Greenberg asks: Do you have a favorite movie monster?

Katt: Yeah, I was never the same after I saw Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

KW: The Anthony Anderson question: If you could have a superpower, which one would you choose?

Katt: Invisibility. That’s the only thing that fame cost me. I used to be able to go places and blend in. Anonymity is something you lose on this side of things.

KW: Can you go to a movie theater or a supermarket?

Katt: Not unless I’m prepared to be Katt Williams.

KW: If you could travel back in time, what advice would you give your 13 year-old self?

Katt: I would reassure him that he was on it, and to trust his instincts about what he intended to bring . and I would tell him not to give away all of your stories before it’s time to, if you intend to have longevity. Each of those movie ideas you have, could turn into $100 million apiece, if you don’t share them before you make it.

KW: Judyth Piazza asks: What key quality do you believe all successful people share?

Katt: I have yet to meet someone who was successful who was even slightly negative. That comes from a muscle training. You can work on negativity and weed it out of your life. I’ve noticed that all of the people who acted as if they were going to be gone too soon, were gone too soon.

KW: The Tavis Smiley question: How do you want to be remembered?

Katt: [Chuckles] Just as a lover of the truth.

KW: Finally, Samuel L. Jackson asks: What’s in your wallet?

Katt: My ID, a SAG card and a little cash.

KW: Thanks again for the time, Katt, and best of luck with the film, the stand-up special and your other endeavors.

Katt: Thank you, Kam. Nobody does it better than you. You got something accomplished, here. I’ve never had a conversation like this with anybody else, for sure.

Rig Up with These Baits and Tactics for Cold-Water Fishing

By Craig Lamb

Not everyone has the luxury of living in warmer coastal climates during winter. Snowbird or full-timer, these baits, and tactics are proven successful this time of the year.

Do the jig

It doesn’t get much simpler than tying on a bucktail jig. Tip it with a soft plastic trailer like a Berkley Gulp! Shrimp or Swimming Mullet. Keep it simple by alternating between the jig and trailer or just using the soft plastic bait on a jig head. You can find out which combination is best based on success.

Hit the holes

In cooler water, baitfish concentrate in deep holes like canals, channel edges or depressions near the shoreline. Bridges and piers are good, too, because they offer refuge from the current. That makes a sinking minnow irresistible for its erratic action resembling a disoriented baitfish. The Rapala X-RAP Saltwater 12 has a slow sinking action that allows you to focus on fishing specific depths until dialing into the fish. Once you find the right depth, the suspending action of the bait keeps it in the chosen strike zone. Let the bait drop into the holes to score.

Keep it up top

Now is the time for catching big speckled trout as they aggressively feed prior to spawning. Make long casts for spooky fish in clear water with a classic Heddon Zara Spook. If the schooling action slows then switch back to the jig and shrimp trailer and keep it moving, but in deeper water.

Spoon feeding

With the water clearer than most seasons, the flash of a gold 1/2-ounce Johnson Silver Minnow gets attention. Add a soft plastic trailer for added strike appeal, and fish the spoon over flats covered in aquatic vegetation.

Pop that cork

You can’t beat the real thing. A pre-made popping cork rig will catch just about anything swimming. Redfish, flounder, drum, cobia, striped bass and speckled trout all fall for the sound and splash of a popping cork. Cast it out, pop the rod tip a couple of times, wait and repeat. Popping corks are most productive in calm water. Prime places are shell bars, sand bars, flooded grass flats and the mouths of bayous or rivers.

For all of the above, the best part of the trip is staying near shore instead of making long runs in the cold wind.  A top choice for fishing in shallow water is the JVX Series by Carolina Skiff. A lightweight hull and modified V-hull design combine for a boat that will carry more, go further and faster with less horsepower.

You get excellent maneuverability and handling with the positive tracking keels. Patented splash guards provide the smooth, dry ride that Carolina Skiff has been known for after 30 years and counting in the business.

Fishermen have plenty of options from which to choose from the JVX Series. Those are a center console, side console and the SS Series, the king of versatility in skiffs. The SS is available in three different sizes (16, 18 and 20 footers) with two different control points. Those include a stick steering bracket for the greater visibility when running over extremely shallow water.

Nine different models are in the JVX Series lineup, and you can customize the rig to fit angling needs.

Lost in Paris

Blu-ray Review by Kam Williams

French Farce Featuring Mime and Slapstick Released to Home Video

If you’re familiar with the surreal cinematic stylings of Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon, then you have an idea of what sort of treat’s in store while watching Lost in Paris. The talented husband and wife team wrote, directed and co-star in their latest magical escape into the theater of the absurd.

Lost in Paris, Blu-ray Review, Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon

The movie might best be described as a cross of Wes Anderson and Charlie Chaplin, as it is an unconventional, visually-captivating affair featuring little in the way of dialogue on the part of the mime-like leads. The lithe-limbed, rubber-faced duo entertain far more with their movements and expressions than with words.

The film unfolds in Canada about a half-century ago, which is where we find Fiona (Gordon) bidding farewell to her beloved Aunt Martha (recently-deceased Emmanuelle Riva) who is moving to Paris. Fast-forward to the present when Fiona, now a librarian, receives an urgent appeal for assistance from her 88 year-old aunt.

In the letter, Martha complains that they’re trying to move her into an assisted-living facility for old folks. But the feisty free spirit will have none of it.

Fiona dutifully springs into action and the next thing you know she’s landed in France sporting a bright orange backpack festooned with a Canadian flag. Her troubles start right off the bat, when she gets stuck in a subway turnstile thanks to that oversized valise.

The slapstick escalates further when the weight of the knapsack causes her to topple into the Seine while posing for a photo on a bridge. She has to shed the bag to survive the ordeal, and ends up separated from all her possessions, including her passport, cell phone, cash and clothes.

It is in these dire straits that Fiona crosses paths with Dom (Abel) an amorous hobo living in a tent pitched along the banks of the river who soon becomes hopelessly smitten. So, Fiona finds herself having to fend of the advances of an ardent admirer while frantically searching for her missing aunt.

The ensuing chase proves every bit as charming and sublime as it is hilarious and implausible. A disarmingly-endearing homage to the Silent Film era!

The Evolution of Clean Technology and the Outboard Engine

The Evolution of Clean Technology and the Outboard Engine

We sat down with Jeff Wasil, Engineering Manager, Emissions Testing, Certification & Regulatory Development for BRP to talk about how the outboard market has evolved over the years with changes in environmental regulations. He gave us a little background on the industry and a glimpse into the future.

Not all that long ago, in the late 90s and early 2000s, the majority of outboard engines and personal water craft (PWC) were conventional carbureted two-stroke engines (99% of them according to EPA/industry data at the time). These types of engines had disproportionately high hydrocarbon emissions and poor fuel economy because upwards of 35% of the fuel and oil were emitted from the engine unburned. The conventional two-stroke engines did, however, perform really well on the boat as they were lightweight and had great torque and power for their size.

Because of the high emissions of these types of engines, the EPA first regulated marine outboard engines in 1998. Manufacturers began working on technologies to reduce emissions in order to meet the new EPA standards. Technologies included direct fuel injection two-stroke and four-stroke engine designs. The four-stroke outboard was an easier path to take from an emissions point of view, but had significant challenges with respect to weight, power, and performance. Adding direct fuel injection (DI) to the two-stroke engine solved the inherent short-circuiting of fuel out of the exhaust, but there were very few examples of production gasoline engines using direct fuel injection, preventing technologies from being borrowed or co-developed from the automotive sector. All of the development work needed to be performed in-house and these early DI systems were complex and not fully understood. Likewise, four-stroke engines struggled to meet consumer demands for performance as most boaters were very much accustomed to the performance of two-stroke engines.

Today, direct fuel injection outboards and electronic fuel injection four-stroke outboards emit over 90% fewer total hydrocarbon and oxides of nitrogen than these early engines and, automotive engines are now just finally starting to use direct fuel injection – nearly 20 years after the technologies were pioneered for the marine market. In many ways, early direct fuel injection outboards lead the way to the advantages of the direct fuel injection automotive engines we enjoy today.

What are the major concerns for boaters when it comes to the environmental impact of outboard engines?

As manufacturer’s we are continuing to improve upon the environmental impact of our products while expanding the technological user features and engine performance. Some of the fuel efficiency improvements made within the last couple years on outboard engines is nothing short of amazing. Some outboard engines are nearly 20% more fuel efficient than engines offered only two years ago. And yes, these technologies use direct fuel injection!

Beyond that, when I was working on an emissions inventory project in California, it became clear that the largest driver of emissions reductions from recreational boats come not from more stringent regulations on new outboards, but rather from retirement of older outboard engines. As an example, as of last year (2016) nearly 90% of the total emissions from recreational boats in California are coming from older two-stroke engines. So even reducing the emissions by another 50%, for example, on new outboards would result in nearly an undetectable difference in overall emissions as the market is still comprised of many older technology engines with very high emissions. Replacing only one conventional two-stroke with a clean-technology, direct fuel injection two-stroke or four-stroke engine is equivalent to removing 30 boats worth of emissions. Think about that when you consider replacing your old engine.

What emissions regulations apply to outboard engines and how will they change in the future?

Outboard engines need to comply with the US EPA, California Air Resources Board, Environment Canada, European Union Recreational Craft Directive, United Arab Emirates regulations and the optional Bodensee (Lake Constance – lake surrounded by Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) standards. Interestingly enough, not all outboard engine manufacturers make a fully “global compliant” outboard engine. Some manufacturers still produce conventional carbureted two-stroke engines for areas that do not have strict marine engine emissions regulations, such as Australia. A large percentage of the market is still comprised of these older technology engines which is disappointing because modern outboard engines emit over 90% fewer emissions and are so much more user-friendly, quieter, smoother running and more fuel efficient. Australia is, however, working toward a regulation that should go into effect starting in 2018 and will come with many benefits to the consumer and the environment.

What is the industry as a whole doing to address environmental issues?

As an industry, we are very much participating in the regulatory development process and leading many of the discussions with respect to recreational marine regulations around the world. We’ve recently completed a five-year industry test program, for example, in which we’ve tested, validated and approved a next-generation biofuel called biobutanol that comes with many performance and environmental benefits to marine engines. As you’re most likely aware, there is a push toward higher ethanol blends such as E15 (15% ethanol). Industry data indicates there are a lot of issues with ethanol such as phase-separation, corrosion, engine enleanment and even catastrophic engine failures. We wanted to be proactive and come up with a solution to the biofuels debate rather than simply just oppose biofuels such as ethanol. Think about it; consumers really do not have a choice when it comes to fuels, especially in non-attainment areas which all mandate oxygenated fuels (ethanol). Approving biobutanol fuel blends up to 16.1 % by volume gives the boating consumer an option for an ethanol-free fuel that is very much compatible with marine engines. Biobutanol does not phase-separate, has a higher energy content and behaves very similarly to standard gasoline. Since we’ve approved biobutanol fuel as an industry, there are several marinas and markets on the East Coast, with availability at gas stations in Texas, Arizona, Missouri and others coming soon. This is a great accomplishment for the industry and provides consumers, even outside of the marine market, with options for ethanol-free fuel, too. This is what we’re great at as an industry; working together for the common good to move the needle in meaningful and profound ways.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Blu-ray Review, Dave Franco, Jackie Chan, The LEGO Ninjago Movie

Blu-ray Review by Kam Williams

3rd Episode in the Inspired Animated Series Arrives on Blu-ray

Lloyd Garmadon (Dave Franco) must be the least liked student at Ninjago High. The unassuming 16 year-old is so unpopular that no kids will even sit on the same side of the bus with him on the ride to school.

What they don’t know, however, is that he has a superhero alter ego, namely, the Green Ninja. In that capacity, he serves as the leader of the Secret Ninja Force, a team of five teens and an android under the tutelage of Lloyd’s wise and wisecracking uncle, Master Wu (Jackie Chan).

In lieu of weapons, he’s trained each of his proteges to harness a different force of nature contained in his magical treasure chest. The hot-headed Red Ninja (Michael Pena) controls fire. The music-loving Black Ninja (Fred Armisen) has mastered earth; the Blue Ninja (Kumail Nanjiani), lightning; and the Gray Ninja (Abbi Jacobson), water; while the robotic White Ninja’s (Zach Woods) domain is ice.

Their appointed mission is to prevent Lord  Garmadon (Justin Theroux) from conquering Ninjago City. Complicating matters is the fact that the evil villain also happens to be Lloyd’s long-lost father. He abandoned his wife (Olivia Munn) and baby when she resisted his embrace of the dark side.

So, all the boy knows about his dad is the little he’s been told by his mother and uncle. Consequently, Lloyd is as eager to meet as to defeat the diabolical warlord with the well-earned reputation as the world’s “Worst Guy Ever.”

If you’ve seen either LEGO or LEGO Batman, then you have a decent idea of what to expect from the third installment of the inspired, animated franchise. Directed by Charlie Bean, the frenetically-paced, action film features not only another visually-captivating adventure, but more of the pithy asides and clever allusions to screen classics which make the movie interesting to adults not necessarily in the target demo.

Ninjago ultimately proves to be the best episode yet because of the profusion of positive messages delivered by the picture’s end. An alternately high-octane, hilarious and heartwarming treat that’s hard to beat!

Carolina Skiff Makes Perfect Small Boat for Work and Play

By Craig Lamb

Keelboat and multihull sailors rely on dinghies to shuttle between anchorage and marina. The boats are mainly used to transport gear and passengers and not much else.

If you or another boater owns a sailboat, sport-fishing or cruising yacht why not add a yacht tender of a different kind to the personal flotilla?

Owning a Carolina Skiff is the answer. The J-Series is a no-frills series that is budget friendly, reliable and ideal for fishing, sight seeing, wildlife viewing and of course, functioning as a small work boat for chores around the marina.

The J-Series is rigged in either center console or tiller handle models. The 16 J CC has an overall length of 15’8” and weighs just 653 pounds. Small in size and big in quality, the J-Series uses 100% composite material, which means no wood or rot. A modified shallow vee is designed to soften the ride and keep everyone aboard dry.

Another Carolina Skiff that is perfect for shallow water fishing or just cruising around the marina is the 15 JV CC. It spans 14’8” overall and weighs only 517 pounds. Draft is 3 inches, making this boat ideal for shallow water around docks and for fishing nearby. Choose from a center console or tiller handle, depending on your payload and space needs.

The 17 JV CC offers slightly more room with similar features. The 17 JV CC spans 16’8” overall with a weight of 750 pounds. The 17 JV CC has lots of features packed into its compact layout.

Up front is a front deck with non-skid surface for making casts to spooky fish. Two 11×19 hatch covers keep gear cool and dry at the bow and stern. A comfortable console cushion seat is positioned at the helm. Full instrumentation and a quick disconnect windshield for mounting electronics is on the console. Two-rod holders keep casting outfits at the ready, and you can fish in comfort from two padded swivel seats at bow and stern.

The versatile skiff needs no introduction to inshore boaters. Most enjoy their time on the water to the fullest. One day that might be pulling crab traps and the next outing could be free diving over lobster beds. Casting for multi-species gamefish is a given, too. So is a day of sightseeing with friends and family.

The demands of tossing crab traps or skis on deck, storing myriad fishing tackle needed for a day on the inlet, and providing a smooth, dry ride for cruising all befall on the design and construction of a skiff.

How can a no-frills rig designed for variety offer space, comfort and durability all in one? Carolina Skiff figured out the answers long ago.

For 30 years now, customer loyalty has grown, along with a longtime dealer network that proclaims Carolina Skiff as the best in the class. The reason why is quality design and construction.

Durability is a foundation of all Carolina Skiff models. Patented box-beam construction produces a solid, durable, no-flexing hull that is completely wood free. You get peace of mind and years of enjoyment knowing a solid hull is the foundation of any boat, and that is a priority at Carolina Skiff.

Carolina Skiff is so confident in its hull design the company warrants the hull’s bottom construction against de-lamination or separation for five years, providing that the integrity of the hull and floor has not been damaged by improper use.

Get even more peace of mind from the foam floatation used in the hull that exceeds U.S. Coast Guard requirements. Foam flotation exceeds Coast Guard requirements, providing positive flotation for shallow draft and quick-planning characteristics. Using more flotation than necessary also creates sound-deadening properties that make the ride smoother and quieter.

Ready to build your new boat? How about experiment with different layouts and models? You can do both, while researching the options at carolinaskiff.com. You can find a dealer, learn more about the brand legacy, and build a boat on the website. You can also contact Carolina Skiff and request a catalog. “Super-Highway of the Skies” Will Upgrade the Airline Experience

By Amy Lignor

It has become a well-known fact, with technology changing and evolving on almost a daily basis, consumers demand the products and services they use that do not fail, are efficient, and provide support when needed. Today’s digital consumer demands access to “real-time” information – anytime, and every time they seek it. Airborne Wireless Network recognizes this fact and has developed a service to address this consumer demand.

Virtually, every day there are new WIFI experiences or a new cell phone that provides features predecessors did not offer, and there are so many more examples in the fast-pace world of technology. However, the forward thinking and clever minds at Airborne Wireless Network, the consumer will be receiving a fantastic WIFI experience in the near future, while their feet are quite far off the ground!

Traditional “single link-systems” – cell-tower and satellite systems, for instance – suffer from what is known as “single points of failure.” Airborne Wireless Network eliminates these issues.

The originality and skill that will offer this better airplane WIFI quality of service, and increase the passenger experience will come in the form of the “Infinitus Super-Highway.” This fully-meshed network will be using aircraft (over 35,000) traveling across the global skies working to relay data. They will “team” together to form a multiple-path network, so that no “obstruction” – not even a raindrop – can cause the system to fail.

Airborne Wireless Network has created a network that will provide live streaming to monitor the health of systems on planes, locomotives, ships, help emergency responders and produce a WIFI service that allows for passengers to have a better uninterrupted “WIFI” experience while they travel. In addition, the onboard hardware can support aircraft to aircraft awareness and monitoring, bringing far more safety to the skies.

This once mega-idea of creating a virtual airborne worldwide web has turned into a monumental reality with Airborne Wireless Network. This will be the first and only true airborne broadband pipeline to be used by worldwide broadband carrier services. In other words, aircraft will be utilized as traveling mini-satellites worldwide data and communications service providers with a new, better way of doing things. Translation: The passenger gets a more positive, beneficial experience in the sky.

In addition to a vastly improved broadband service to consumers, Airborne Wireless Network generates income for all partners involved through its increased data traffic as well. Plus, the lightweight hardware makes for easy implementation on both aircraft and ground stations. Upgrading and replacement costs of the hardware is very easy to do and is cost-efficient. The bottom line is airline passengers benefit, but the airlines and broadband carriers reap the benefits as well.

So as the “next big thing” comes out on the market – whether that be a new phone, tablet, iPod, etcetera – just remember that the forward thinkers of Airborne Wireless Network are working to provide you with something that will have the world of technology “soaring” into the future.
